With sales down 7.8%, the new car market was particularly gloomy in 2022. Except for electrics.

For more than two years, nothing really works. And for good reason, while car sales were doing quite well in 2019, the Covid-19 epidemic quickly brought everything down, kicking the fragile house of cards for new vehicle sales. For while the occasion has been particularly hard hit in recent months, the market for first-hand cars has also tasted over the course of the year. And for good reason, the figures are far from being very glorious, to the great displeasure of industry professionals which recorded very significant falls.

Indeed, according to the latest official figures, sales of new cars plummeted by 7.8% over the year as a whole. According to PFA (Automobile Platform), only 1,529,035 vehicles were registered between January and December 2022. By way of comparison, no less than 2.2 million cars had been sold in 2019, before the crisis linked to Covid-19 and the war in Ukraine. However, December was a slightly promising month, with sales up 0.1%. It’s not much, but it’s a good sign all the same that it is important to take into account.

If almost all manufacturers have seen their sales fall during this year, some have nevertheless pulled out of the game, such as Toyota or Dacia and Alfa Romeo. Overall, electric cars have met with some success, with market share rising to 13%. However, gasoline remains the most popular engine, representing 37.2% of the sales mix for the whole of 2022, then very largely dominating diesel as well as hybrids, in particular rechargeable. The latter is indeed struggling to find his place.
