Technical inspection: what will change in 2023

The technical control will evolve in 2023 with the appearance of some new features, for cars as well as for two-wheelers.

The technical control is a compulsory passage for all cars over four years old, to be renewed every two years in order to continue to circulate legally.

As technical and regulatory developments progress, technical control is regularly modified, and this year 2023 will also be marked by theappearance of novelties concerning the technical inspection of cars, two-wheelers and light quadricycles.

Technical inspection: the emergency call system will be checked

Compulsory since 2018 on new vehicles, the emergency call system (or eCall) allows you to automatically notify the emergency services in the event of an accident, but also to geolocate the car in order to facilitate the work of the emergency services. To verify that this technology is fully functional, it will be subject to a technical inspection check from this year.

Indeed, from May 20, 2023the technical inspection centers must check the operation of the emergency call system equipped vehicles. The failures of the GPS signal, the communication system by mobile telephone network, the on-board software or the audio components will be analyzed in particular: these mainly electronic elements will give rise to a minor failure. The presence of a malfunction indicator, on the other hand, will give rise to a counter-visit.

Technical control: all vehicles soon concerned

Since the introduction of the technical control obligation more than 30 years ago, in 1992, light vehicles (cars and utility vehicles) have been concerned by the measure, but not two-wheelers such as motorcycles and scooters, as well as light quadricycles. But that may change soon.

Even if the measure arouses the anger of motorcyclists, the technical control for two-wheelers and light quadricycles should soon become a reality. Indeed, the government wants to check the polluting emissions of all vehicles, as well as their safety problems.

Technical inspection: for two-wheelers and light quadricycles

Technical control should become mandatory for motorcycles, scooters and light quadricycles for the June 2023. Initially, it would only consist of a visual check, but the check procedures could well evolve over time, as for cars.

On the price side, it will take around fifty euros for the technical inspection of these vehicles. An additional expense to be expected, in a context where the budget of motorists and bikers is increasingly strained.
