Increasingly popular, superethanol E85 was particularly popular in 2022, in particular because of its price.
Fuel supply tensions in no way justify the surge in prices at several service stations. We will not allow prices to be artificially inflated. I seized the DGCCRF to act. Checks take place in the @hautsdefrance https://t.co/RXJWH912tA

After a small lull, the price of fuel has started to rise again in recent weeks. But this is not really new, since the prices displayed at the pump have been playing yo-yo for months. A situation that is obviously not easy for motorists, who have had to deal with particularly high prices per liter since last year. In question, the war in ukraine, which increases the price of oil, as well as the very high taxation on fuel. Indeed, taxes represent approximately 60% of the price of a liter at present, and the government does not want to change that. Drivers are therefore trying to find alternative solutions to reduce expenses.

Thus, many motorists have decided to switch to E85 superethanol, a fuel that is still significantly cheaper than conventional unleaded. This one is in fact made from 85% ethanol, which considerably reduces its price per litre. Moreover, it is also less taxed. As a result, it has now been very successful for several months. Indeed, according to a report by the Bioethanol Collective, the consumption of this fuel has increased by 83% over the last year compared to 2021. Today, E85 occupies a market share of 6.5%compared to 4% in 2021. A very nice increase for this alternative.

This enthusiasm for this cheaper and cleaner fuel is rather recent, since half of motorists driving with it have been doing so for less than a year. And several reasons explain this trend, including the rise in the price of gasoline and the desire to drive cleaner. Especially since ethanol is mainly manufactured in France, made from cereals and beets grown here. Its only downside? Its consumption slightly higher than standard unleaded.
