After a disastrous 2022, 2023 is starting a little better for new car sales. We take stock of the situation.

Since the start of the health crisis and theCovid-19 outbreak, the situation is far from being good for the automotive industry. Worse still, it is even catastrophic, with sales returning to the level of the 1970s for a period. And over the years, no real improvement could be noticed. In 2022, registrations had indeed fallen by 7.8% compared to 2021, a year which was already far from being a good vintage. Suffice to say that the manufacturers had good reason to worry, even if some managed to pull out of the game all the same. But would the year 2023 be synonymous with improvement?

Everything leads us to believe so, and this is very good news. In fact, in January, there was a very slight improvement in registrations. According to figures released by the CCFA, sales have indeed increased by 8.8% compared to January 2022 for passenger cars. On the other hand, those of light utilities fell by 5.4% over the same period. In total, 111,939 cars were sold last month, compared to 102,899 in 2022. A nice improvement which is intended to be rather reassuring, even if the figures are lower than in January 2021.

But as you can imagine, all manufacturers are not really in the same boat. Indeed, if Stellantis lost 9.5% in January despite the good results of Fiat, Opel and DS, Renault saw its sales increase by 23.6% over the same period. Toyota is also a hit, with registrations up 18%. Unsurprisingly, it is still gasoline that dominates sales, followed by simple hybrids and electric cars. Diesel, on the other hand, lags far behind.
