Motorways: what if they were renationalised?

While the question of the nationalization of highways is back on the table, this would not be a brilliant idea according to some.

Since February 1, the price of tolls has risen sharply. A record increase of 4.75%, which we owe in particular to the incredible rise in inflation over the past year. Indeed, the management companies have the right to pass on up to 70% of the latter in the increase in their prices. And they did not hesitate to do so, of course. An outbreak that obviously has a hard time passing. Especially since a report denounces the indecent profitability of these companies, to the detriment of road users who pay more and more each year. So much so that some are wondering about the renationalization of highways in the future.

But is it really a good idea? Not really according to the UDI senator from Essonne, Vincent Delahaye. Questioned by our colleagues from the Auto-Moto site, this one does not mince words. He explains, in fact, that I don’t think this is a good solution because the state often manages quite badly. If you can cite me services or infrastructures which are managed by the State, and which are well managed, I am interested« .

Stricter contracts

But then, what solutions could be put in place? For the senator, it would simply be necessary to review the terms of the contracts and check that they are respected. ” Private companies are competent to manage the motorways provided that they are well supervised. When we have long contracts, in particular, review clauses are needed. Every 4 or 5 years, for example, we take stock and look at where we are ». A simple solution but which should not be implemented immediately…
