As soon as launched, immediately a success! The MG4, a new electric compact model from MG, rose over the first two months of the year to the rank of the manufacturer’s first model in France.
Difficult against success of MG, in France and in Europeto realize that a few years ago, the brand was bankrupt. Founded in 1924, Morris Garages was once one of the most important brands of the British Leyland consortium. It also included Rover, Jaguar, Austin, Triumph, Land Rover and Mini. But, in the 1980s, the consortium was faced with a major financial crisis. It had led to the disappearance of legendary brands. Like Triumph, Austin and Morris, and selling Jaguar and Land Rover. At the end of the 90s, only MG and Rover remained. They tried a last stunt with the new MG Rover group. He did bankruptcy in 2005 due to an aging range and lack of real novelty. It’s the Chinese state group SAIC, which acquired it in 2006. Only the enjoyment of the MG mark was granted to him, and not that of the Rover mark. Probably due to a clause agreed with Land Rover on the use of the Rover name. SAIC, however, recovered the old Rover models, and created a very close brand: Roewe, which distributed a rebadged version of the 75. In 2009 the production of the MG 6 started, but only in the UK. For us, MG is truly back since 2017. That year the ZS crossover was launched. SAIC having decided to make MG its flagship in Europe, the ZS – unlike the MG6 – is since distributed in most European markets, and in particular France.

MG has since paid particular attention to develop an electrified range. In addition to the ZS, we find in the electric range the large Marvel-R SUV, the MG5 station wagon, and the all-new MG4 compact. The only non-electric models are the SUV EHS, and the thermal version of the ZS crossover. The brand is very successful in Europe: it was in 2022 the first Chinese car brand, ahead of Polestar and Lynk&Co.
In France, over the first two months of the year, the MG4 was the brand’s best-selling model ! It secured a 0.7% market share, and 1,690 registrations. A promising start to his career, being the only MG model appearing in the Top 100 best-selling models in France… The MG brand is therefore more than ever back in France, and these figures show that the revival of the brand has borne fruit. She does not intend to rest on her laurels, the MG One and the Cyberster roadster being planned for the next few months.
