Ford unveils its Explorer electric SUV, a model intended primarily for the European market which is based on Volkswagen’s MEB platform.
This is the symbol of Ford’s revival, especially in Europe. Her name ? The Ford Explorer, a surname which is already well known within the range of the American manufacturer since it is also a large plug-in hybrid SUV sold here, but more intended for the American market.
Just like the “traditional” Explorer, the electric Explorer embodies the spirit of adventure by targeting a broad customer base, with an expected starting price of less than 45,000 euros.
The design of this new model is inspired by the lines of the great Explorer, but in a more futuristic way. The wide, flat front incorporates the inverted “L” shaped headlights that point directly towards the center of the grille dominated by “Explorer” script. Gray and black plastic moldings give the SUV a rugged appearance.
Aesthetically, at least for the front, we can’t help but see a small link with the Audi Q4 e-tron. Moreover, the Ford Explorer is based on a well-known platform within the Volkswagen group since it is the MEB, which equips the Volkswagen ID.4 and other Audi Q4 e-tron precisely.
Six colors are available for this Ford Explorer: Arctic Blue (the launch color), Vibrant Blue My Mind, Frozen White, Magnetic Grey, Agate Black and Lucid Red.
On board, the Explorer is based on a certain number of novelties that have never been seen before across the entire range. In addition to the 5-inch screen in the instrument cluster, the Ford Sync Move infotainment system makes an appearance with a 15-inch screen that can swivel up to 30 degrees.
The screen itself is part of the My Private Locker storage compartment: in practice, in its lowest position, the screen covers the compartment, thus making it possible to store a few objects out of sight.
Beneath the center armrest is the MegaConsole, a 17-litre space that can accommodate 1.5-litre bottles or a 15-inch laptop, while within the center tunnel the cupholders can be repositioned to create even more space.
The trunk volume is announced at 450 liters and can be increased to 1,400 liters by lowering the second row of seats.

Ford has yet to reveal battery capacity and expected range. According to the first rumors, we expect about 500 km with a single charge. As far as charging is concerned, Ford is limiting itself to saying for the moment that the Explorer can go from 10 to 80% in about 25 minutes.
The power of the engines is also unknown. Ford specifies that there will be two distinct versions: propulsion with a single engine and four-wheel drive with two electric blocks.
The driving aids are very comprehensive, including 12 ultrasonic sensors, five cameras and three radars to monitor everything that is happening around the car at 360°. The Explorer is the brand’s first model in Europe to feature Lane Centring and Assisted Lane Change systems, which not only keep the car on course, but also allow it to change lanes automatically.
This is followed by the now ubiquitous Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind Spot Assist, as well as the Clear Exit Assist system which alerts passengers to the presence of an oncoming car or person when opening the door. Automatic emergency braking and the Active Park Assist 2.0 automatic parking function are also included.
As you have noticed, we do not yet have all the information about this model, but we will certainly know more in a few months, since the car should arrive on our roads before the end of the year. The new electric Ford Explorer will be manufactured in Europe, at the plant in Cologne, Germany.
