Going on an adventure in the desert, Emily broke down with her 2CV and had to show ingenuity in mechanics to make a motorcycle.
Even if the Citroën 2CV was recently voted favorite car of the French, it almost played a dirty trick on our protagonist. Emily Leray was on a lonely raid in the Sahara, Morocco, when his steel camel, as he calls it, gave way. It was his vehicle, in which he had gone on an adventure in the desert. When the story could have gone very wrong for him, he showed ingenuity to build a motorcycle from his wrecked car.
Thanks to his improvised motorcycle, this 43-year-old French adventurer was able to flee the war in Western Sahara in 1993 and reach Mauritania. Even though he was aware of the danger, Emily wanted to continue her raid at all costs, even if he had to drool to do so.
Before arriving in Mauritania, he was stopped by a military patrol because he was heading towards the Polisario Front army, responsible for putting an end to the Spanish occupation. He obviously wasn’t welcome and he turned around and headed north.

Expert in mechanics, he had already worked in many workshops. When his 2CV broke down, he didn’t hesitate and decided to create a motorcycle with half the chassis. The front wheel was the only suspension of the device, while the rear received the force of the transmission to move. He lowered the center half of the chassis and positioned the engine in the middle. The maximum speed of the motorcycle was 20 km/h.
Without a soldering iron, he improvised, with screws and a hammer. His motorcycle had no brakes, which caused him some difficulty in stopping…
The rudimentary motorcycle allowed him to cross the desert until he had only half a liter of water left to survive. A military SUV came to his aid. When he told his story, no one believed him. He was therefore fined because his vehicle was not homologated and they seized his makeshift motorcycle.
Three months later, he spent a large sum of money to get his motorcycle back. He still owns it today, as you can see in the video below!
