Volkswagen explains why its future electric cars will be cheaper

Volkswagen plans to launch an electric car for less than 25,000 euros in 2025, then another model for less than 20,000 euros in 2027.

Several analysts agree that the future Volkswagen ID.2 will be the cornerstone of the democratization of the electric car in the future, in the same way as the electric R5 which will arrive globally at the same time.

These two models will be marketed from 25,000 euros, excluding the ecological bonus in force. With its price, the compact from the firm Wolfsburg will have the mission of giving a stronger impetus to the sales of electric cars in Europe.

But how did Volkswagen manage, in less than ten years, to lower prices so drastically while maintaining its standards? Indeed, with its future ID.2, Volkswagen does not intend to switch to low-cost, as is currently the case with the Dacia Spring displayed at around 20,000 euros, but rather wishes to make it the new electric Polo and, certainly, eventually, the best-selling car in Europe.

To answer this question, it is Arno Antlitz, the financial director of the Volkswagen group, who provides some answers in the columns of our colleagues from Autocar.

Unity is strength

Volkswagen has several tricks up its sleeve to reduce production costs and thus have a beneficial effect on selling prices.

“We can now work on economies of scale and production volumes. The ID.2 will have versions for the Cupra and Skoda brands, which will allow us to reduce costs while remaining competitive. In addition, there will be many technical innovations, starting with the batteries. The batteries will be produced in-house at our factory in Valencia”explained Arno Antlitz.

The standard ID.2 will have many points in common with the ID.2 all concept presented a few months ago. Among the elements that we will find on all future electric city cars of the Volkswagen group, there will be the MEB Entry platform associated with an electric motor placed at the level of the front axle, this same motor which will be powered by a battery located under the floor. and able to provide up to 450 km range on a single charge.

Along with the new powertrain, Volkswagen will rely on advanced driver assistance systems like the next-generation Travel Assist and ParkAssist Plus to help the driver with maneuvers.

Renault vs Volkswagen ?

An SUV version of the ID.2 should see the light of day shortly after the presentation of the electric city car, while Volkswagen is preparing another accessible electric car with the ID.1. The first rumors point to with a base price of less than 20,000 euros and a commercialization which could take place by 2027.

For its part, Renault is also planning a small electric car for less than 20,000 euros, but according to the first information given by Luca de Meo, the boss of the Renault group, there should be some compromises and the car could be inspired of the Japanese kei car model. On the Volkswagen side, the ID.1 could be the replacement for the e-up! electric, a micro-city car of course, but which could be more versatile than the Renault.
