A battery allowing a range of 621 miles (about 1,000 kilometers) on a single charge has just been presented by Gotion High Techa Chinese battery startup, at its annual technology conference in Hefei, Anhui province.

Its new L600 Astroinno lithium-manganese-iron phosphate (LMFP) battery will be produced next year. The new Astroinno pack has already passed all the necessary safety tests and could potentially last up to 4,000 charge-discharge cycleswhich equates to about 2.4 million miles (4 million kilometers), exceeding the average life of a car.

Ten years of research and development

According The Independentthe company spent ten years developing the cells in-house to make them commercially viable and thus overcome the previous problems of this type of battery, which suffered from low conductivity, low packing density and a high temperature dissolution of manganese, which made them too inefficient and too heavy to be used on our electric vehicles.

Gotion, headquartered in Fremont, Calif., says that with the help of new electrolyte additives, co-precipitation, doping encapsulation and new granulation technology, the battery L600 Astroinno no longer suffers from high temperature manganese leaching problems.

How it works ?

The battery is wrapped in a sandwich structure with liquid cooling on both sides and a minimalist design approach, which reduces the number of structural parts by 45% and the weight of structural components by 32% compared to previous versions.

“The Astroinno L600 LMFP cell achieves a gravimetric energy density of 240 Wh/kg and a volumetric energy density of 525Wh/L. It can reach more than 4,000 hours of operation. It can achieve more than 4,000 cycles at room temperature and 1,800 cycles at high temperature, easily achieves 18 minutes of fast charging and passes all safety tests. Thanks to the high energy density of the Astroinno battery, we can also achieve a range of 1,000 km without using NCM material”said Cheng Qian, executive chairman of Gotion Global.

For comparison, the lithium-ion cells with silicon anode produced by Amprius have an energy density of 450 Wh/kg, while Tesla’s 4860 type cells, which use a graphite anode, offer an estimated energy density between 272 and 296 Wh/kg.

Volkswagen is already one of Gotion’s customers, but the Chinese battery maker has not disclosed which vehicle will be the first to receive its new L600 cells. In a similar vein, manufacturer Astroinno plans to build a $2.3 billion battery factory in Green Charter Township, Michigan.

It remains to be seen how this will be characterized in an electric car and in real conditions of use. To assert that a battery is capable of providing 1,000 km of autonomy without knowing the very components of the car in which it will be installed (coefficient of penetration in the air, weight, power, etc.) today seems very ambitious. .
