A recent consultation organized by the Senate highlighted the strong opposition of the French to the generalization of EPZs in France.
Since their creation a few years earlier, EPZs have not ceased to create controversy. And for good reason, motorists do not really adhere to this measure, rightly considered discriminatory. Its sole purpose is to prevent cars that are too old from entering the big cities. And for that, this system is based on one criterion: the date of first registration, not the actual emissions. You must then stick a Crit’Air sticker on your windshield in order to be able to enter the area concerned. A situation that complicates the lives of many drivers, whose car will soon become obsolete.
From 2025, all cities with more than 150,000 inhabitants will necessarily have to become EPZs. A measure that does not please either some elected officials or the drivers concerned. In order to calm the discontent a little, the Senate has decided to launch a major consultation to gather the opinion of the main parties concerned. And the latter responded present, but not in the way the government would have liked. Indeed, Philippe Tabarot, senator Les Républicains des Alpes-Maritimes has just unveiled the results and they are in fact more than consensual. In fact, 86% of voters are against EPZs, particularly individuals. 69% are even totally against it.

One of the voters explains that “there is blatant discrimination between different citizens; there are those who can afford to keep up with the required technology and those who cannot“, denouncing the policy of the government against the most modest. Indeed, only 16% of French people “believe that they have satisfactory alternative solutions”. And among them, 67% say they are in favor of the generalization of EPZs in France. Be that as it may, the majority of respondents are familiar with the principle of this system and are fully aware of how it works. But most don’t approve of it.
