This Pontiac prototype from the 60’s is sold for a million euros

One of the rarest Pontiacs ever built has just gone on sale. Never marketed, this model is worth a fortune.

One of Pontiac the rarest ever designed has just been put on sale. it’s about the Banshee XP-833the first of four Banshee concept cars developed by General Motors between 1964 and 1988. At the time, the goal behind its development was to compete with the Ford Mustangwhose success had been explosive and almost immediate.

The Mustang’s success took everyone by surprise, including Ford itself. General Motors then tried to counterattack with its Pontiac brand (now defunct). A vehicle came out of it strangely similar to the Corvette, which was also being developed by General Motors around the same time. Only, it was much more powerful and was never marketed.

The unique Pontiac Banshee XP-833 is offered for sale

In 1964, two prototypes of the Banshee XP-833 were created under the Pontiac brand. In addition to sporting a magnificent design for a muscle car, it was endowed with exceptional performance for its time. Project manager John DeLorean wanted to make it an amazing car in every way.

After several hesitations as to the form of the Banshee, two prototypes ended up being produced in 1964. A silver shade was chosen for the color. On the engine side, it is a V8 powerful astonishment that was selected. It was the performance provided by this engine that put an end to the project. General Motors was concerned that the XP-833 would compete with the Corvette. This Pontiac was thus never marketed.

A sale for a staggering amount

The Pontiac Banshee XP-833 still indirectly survived in another form. It would have strongly inspired a concept car developed in 1965, the Mako Shark II. The latter, which was presented at the Paris Motor Show the same year, served as the basis for the Corvette C3produced from 1968.

For the past few days, it has been put up for sale by Napoli Classics company for the astronomical sum of 1.2 million dollars (1.12 million euros). This amount may seem far too high for a Pontiac, whose vehicles usually trade for less than 100,000 euros. Nevertheless, this is one of the cars the rarest of the American brand.
