For the first time since 1905, the Geneva International Motor Show will take place from October 5 to 14, 2023 in Doha, Qatar and 30 brands will be present.
No, there is no mistake in the title, the Geneva Motor Show will take place this year, but not in Switzerland. Indeed, for the first time in almost a century, the “Geneva International Motor Show” (GIMS) will take place in Doha, Qatar, from October 5 to 14, 2023.
Will this relocation have a positive impact on the event? For the moment, according to the organizers, it would seem so, since thirty car brands have announced their presence at the show and the organization specifies that there will be the reveal of ten new vehicles.
The choice of Doha as the venue is obviously not insignificant, since it is a strategic initiative to broaden the audience of the show. Partnerships with Qatar Airways and Qatar Tourism are in place to facilitate travel for visitors.
This relocation also aims to attract a more affluent audience, thus broadening the reach of the show. Additionally, synchronizing with the 2023 Qatar Formula 1 Grand Prix, scheduled for October 6-8 at the Lusail circuit, car enthusiasts will have two reasons to come to Doha.
In total, during the ten days of the event in Qatar, GIMS expects around 200,000 visitors and 1,000 journalists. As a reminder, in 2019, during the last edition of the Geneva Motor Show, this event brought together 602,000 visitors.
The following editions were canceled due to the pandemic and, more generally, the disinterest of manufacturers regarding this type of event. Most preferred to focus on better controlled communication, far removed from the flood of new products and presentations at the time of the Show.
For fans who will not be able to travel to Qatar, a glimmer of hope shines on the horizon. The GIMS will return to its cradle from February 26 to March 3, 2024 to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of its first international edition in 1924.
