Cyclo-sport: a late arrival in France

Towards the end of the years 1950, the France has become the most grand world producer of mopeds. In fact, French production was close to the million of mopeds distributed throughout the territory national.

During this period, the cyclo-sport French often resided in a version sportive cyclos called ” tourism “. The latter have a two-seater saddle and a motor monovitesse. It was possible to add an engine block of 2 ch with two or three speeds.

Even for the fastest models, the cyclos did not exceed the bar of 70 km/h. Except for the Motobecane AV89 moped in a two-seater saddle which was timed at 71 km/h by our colleagues at MotoRevue. Anyway, the speed of mopeds had already been limited to 50 km/h since June 1, 1964.

From the 1960s, with the arrival of Belgians then some Italians in the segment, producers French have been jostled. They partly abandon the two-speed engines for foreign engines.

Ten years later, the pressure of imports from Japan is too great! Although the Italians were often the best on the market, our national builders who are Motobecane et Peugeot resist thanks to their very grosse production.
