It is a rather surprising decision that the Olympic Committee could take: to make karting an event during the 2028 Olympic Games.
The Paris 2024 Olympic Games are fast approaching, and on Auto Plus, we keep you regularly informed of the impact of this event on traffic in the Paris region.
For once, we will not discuss the specific signage put in place during the event or the reserved traffic lanes, but rather a discipline.
In fact, according to journalists from Reutersthe Olympic Committee is considering introducing a karting event at the Olympic Gamesand more precisely on the occasion of the Los Angeles Olympic Games which will be held in 2028.
The Games focus globally on disciplines such as athletics, swimming or shooting, but not on motor sports. These days, when the hunt for the tiniest gram of CO2 is de rigueur, a motorsport event would not necessarily go in the direction of the “eco-responsible” side that the Olympic Games are increasingly trying to convey.
According to Reuters, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) is pushing for the committee to finally include a motor sport in its competition. This would obviously mean the disappearance of another event, but in the past we have already seen some sports integrated and others removed.
It was enough to give rise to several rumors concerning the way in which motorsport was going to be integrated into the Olympics. Some refer to discussions around the electric go-karta discipline that the FIA would try to integrate into the Olympic Games since 2018.
A decision could be taken in the days to come, especially since electric karting would present a double interest. On the one hand, there is no need for a huge circuit nearby for the events, while, on the other hand, this would give a more “eco-responsible” dimension to the Olympic Games. It remains to be seen which sport will be replaced by karting if this discipline were to be integrated into the Olympics.
