At Pebble Beach, Ford has just presented the new Mustang GTD, a kind of road-legal GT3 with 800 hp.
A gray configuration with golden rims, a spoiler with gooseneck support, an almost similar price… Here is without doubt the most ambitious Ford Mustang in history, since it seems to want to rub shoulders with the fearsome Porsche 911 GT3 RS.
On the sidelines of Monterey Car Week, Ford presents the Mustang GTD, the road-legal version of the GT3 presented a few months earlier. If, at Volkswagen, the acronym GTD is associated with a “dynamic” diesel Golf, on the side of the American firm, this is quite simply the most extreme production Mustang in history.
To create this special series typed for the track, Ford relied on its almost century-old sporting experience. Indeed, right from the design phase, the engineers decided to replace several aluminum body panels with new, lighter carbon fiber panels.
Regarding the suspension, the designers chose to equip the car with a fully adjustable shock absorber kit, both in compression and in rebound and height. The bodywork, meanwhile, has been given an active aerodynamic kit, capable of varying the angles of the rear wing and the front splitters, depending on the curve or the straight line.
Under the hood, no surprise, we find the 5.2-litre V8 from the new Mustang, which has been supercharged for the occasion and which is equipped with a new dry sump lubrication system. Everything is now handled by a new 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox with a carbon fiber driveshaft for near-ideal mass balance. Everything is associated with magnesium rims, a titanium exhaust or even Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes.
According to Ford, this special Mustang was designed for a very specific purpose: develop more than 800 hp to go under 7 minutes on a lap of the Nordschleife.
To achieve this, Ford announced that the entire body of this Mustang GTD was studied in a wind tunnel in Allen Park, Michigan, where a handful of team members gathered in 2021 for this mission which, on the paper, looked like an impossible dream: design a Mustang capable of challenging the best European sports carsincluding the famous 911 GT3 RS.
“The Ford Mustang GTD overturns all conventional wisdom about supercars. It’s a new approach for us. We didn’t design a road car for the circuit, but a racing car for the road. The Mustang GTD takes the technologies of our Mustang GT3, all in a carbon fiber body and homologated for the road.says Jim Farley, CEO of Ford.
Not all potential customers will be satisfied, since the brand has announced that production will be limited to a few units only, with a base price of around 300,000 dollars (276,000 euros). A price very close to its German competitor mentioned a little higher.
The first deliveries will take place between the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025. As for the GT3 version dedicated exclusively to the circuit, we will see it next year at the 24 hours of Le Mans.
