Kia lifts the veil on a new electric SUV, the EV5, a technical cousin of the EV6 which will arrive very soon in Europe.
The Kia EV5, which was just unveiled at the Chengdu Motor Show in China, is the Korean brand’s new offering in the compact electric SUV segment, with similar styling to the EV9, but with five seats and an emphasis on comfort.
In practice, the Kia EV5 is sort of the all-electric Sportage we don’t have, just like the EV9 is for the Sorento. The EV5 will first go on sale in China at the end of 2023, but Kia has plans to launch it in other markets as well. The full list of countries where it will be marketed will be announced next October during Kia EV Day.
No official technical information on the EV5 has been released yet, although we know that the car is based on the E-GMP platform already used for the Kia EV6, EV9 and other Hyundai Ioniq 5.
Without announcing any technical details on the engines, power, battery and autonomy, the Korean manufacturer focuses on the first official photos and on its “particular” style with very rectilinear shapes which are generally in line with the continuity of the EV9.
The styling concept of the Kia EV5 is to combine strong and solid lines inspired by natural landscapes and modern architecture, under the name of “Opposites United” (united opposites). According to Kia, this therefore gives us an imposing electric SUV with shapes that are both square and “soft”.
The “Tiger Face”, typical of the most recent Kias, has been revised with three-dimensional “Signature Star Map Lighting” daytime running lights. The shape of the rear pillar, the large spoiler on the rear window and the rear lights with an LED light strip are particularly original.
For the interior, the Kia EV5 offers comfort, convenience and safety, inspired by the “cocooning” effect of living rooms and lounge areas. The dashboard is also straight, with few physical controls, everything is generally grouped within the two screens in a row. Note, however, the presence of shortcuts, probably with haptic controls and present under the central touch screen.
In any case, if we want to know more about this model, we will have to wait until next October as stated above. This SUV should probably be offered in France and present itself as an alternative to the Sportage which, as a reminder, is not offered in electric, but only in hybrid.
