The sale of an automatic speed camera creates a scandal in Belgium

A Belgian auction house offered a radar at auction. But, this announcement has no more to local authorities…

A very strange auction almost took place in Belgium. On August 29, the auction house Hammertime (based in Antwerp) will offer vehicles and equipment that belonged to a small Flemish municipality, Schoten. And among these objects is… an automatic speed camera.

Other very surprising ones are offered for sale. Four old service vehicles and fifteen seized vehicles belonging to the Schoten police will be auctioned, along with a bulldozer and 260 abandoned or stolen bicycles. But, it is this radar which was to constitute the key piece of this sale.

A radar in an auction in Belgium

The auction house Hammertime was amused by the situation. “Will you be the first Belgian to have a private speed camera in your garden? », was it written on the ad. It is in fact not frequent to see passing such an object in an auction. “I’ve offered just about everything for sale in my career, but never off the radar”observed Steven Teughels, who works for Hammertime.

According to him, it is certain that people might have been interested by this radar. He “comes fully wired. I’m no expert, but I can tell you that someone with some technical knowledge will definitely get it working again. We therefore address the enthusiasts, or of course the ‘haters’ who have something else in mind ».

A political problem

The announcement of this sale was however not appreciated by the municipality of Schoten, owner of this radar. The mayor of Schoten asked Hammertime to remove this item from sale. “If true, it has never been politically approved”he assured, according to the news site 7sur7.be. “We will contact Hammertime, as we have no intention of selling a radar. »

“It may have been said too hastily that anything stored in a particular warehouse will be auctioned off. But the idea is not to sell someone a speed camera and then set it on fire in their garden.”, underlined the mayor of Schotten. So the radar will not be part of the items sold by Hammertime on August 29.
