Back to school: how to choose the right child seat?

You may not be ready to hear this, but you have to admit it: School starts again soon ! Vacations of course, after a summer which, we hope, has been rich in good times, travels and above all rest. But it is also that of children, which this year is set for Monday, September 4 for the older ones. If for the first time, you are going to have to take your little ones to kindergartenmaybe you are considering the purchase of a car seat, or a booster seat. Here are our tips for choosing the one that will be best suited to your child.

The size

Check that the car seat corresponds to the age and weight of your child. Some seats are specially designed for toddlers while others are upgradeable and suitable for use over several years.

L’orientation

When it comes to seat orientation, there are two main options: rear-facing positioning and forward-facing positioning. Experts recommend keeping your child in a rear-facing position for as long as possible, as this provides better protection in the event of an accident. And contrary to popular belief, this orientation is not limited to babies.

Fixation

Make sure the car seat fits easily and correctly in your vehicle. Most models include ISOFIX fastening systems (compulsory in France on new cars sold since 2011) which simplifies installation and greatly improves safety. Of course, check the compatibility of the seat with your vehicle.

Comfort

When choosing a seat, give preference to one that offers the best support and the greatest comfort to your child. Examine the padding, adjustable headrests, adaptable safety harnesses and reclining options.

Conformity

It goes without saying that the car seat you are considering buying should be approved and comply with safety standards. Make sure in particular that it meets the European standard i-Size (R129). The old ECE R44/04 standard (which has been gradually replaced by i-Size since 2013) is still authorized for sale until 1^is september.

A test is worth all the comparisons

As far as possible, perform a car seat fit test in your car before you buy it. This will allow you to quickly assess its adaptation, its installation and the level of comfort it offers your child.
