A hard blow for Toyota: the Japanese manufacturer is forced to suspend production at its Japanese factories, due to a giant computer failure.
Times are tough for Toyota and its Japanese factories: a few days ago, a fire had devastated a factory of one of its suppliers in the Czech Republic, disrupting the European production of the Japanese manufacturer’s Yaris and Aygo X.
Today, Toyota is again in turmoil, after the occurrence of a major computer failurethis morning of Tuesday, August 29, 2023, impacting the production of its Japanese factories. The manufacturer specifies however that a cyberattack would not be at the origin of this incident, contrary to what it experienced last year and which paralyzed its production for a day.
In detail, this failure prevents Toyota’s computer system from processing spare parts orders, which forced the automaker to suspend production at 12 of its Japanese factories in the morning: no less than 25 production lines were affected. in the early hours of the day.
A few hours later, Toyota was also forced to suspend production at its two other production sites in Japan, so this is the all of the brand’s 14 factories located on the Japanese archipelago which are therefore currently shut down, either 28 production lines in total…
According to a Toyota spokesperson, this large-scale computer failure only impacts Japanese factories of the group, and not its production sites located abroad. The French factory of Toyota, located in Onnaing near Valenciennes in the North, and which manufactures in particular the Toyota Yaris, Yaris Cross and Mazda 2 Hybrid, is not, for example, not concerned.
Very quickly, the markets reacted to this bad news: at the opening of the Tokyo stock exchange, Toyota’s action quickly plunged into the red in the morning, before regaining color in the course of the post- noon. At closing, the Toyota’s share price was ultimately down -0.21% on this tough day, when the Nikkei 225 index posted a slight increase of +0.18%.
In the first six months of 2023, Toyota produced more than 5.6 million vehicles. The Japanese group plans to sell 11.38 million vehicles worldwide in the 2023-2024 financial year, up 7.8% compared to the previous financial year, which would mark a new historic record.
