Mini Countryman (2023): electrification of the species

Mini presents, on the sidelines of the Munich Motor Show, the new generation of its Countryman. First available in 100% electric, thermal versions are also planned.

On the sidelines of the Munich Motor Show, Mini lifts the veil on the new Countryman, the technical cousin of the BMW X1. Taller and fatter than before, the Countryman isn’t much of a ‘mini’ anymore, with a six centimeter rise in height (1.66 meters) and a thirteen centimeter extension in length compared to its predecessor. (4.43 meters).

The design of the new Mini Countryman evolves sparingly, with generally the same codes that we knew on the previous generation, but with a decidedly more modern ensemble. The widened wheel arches give a robust look, while the C-pillar, a key element of the vehicle’s aesthetics, can be personalized as desired, harmonizing with one of the four available roof colours.

At the rear, note the arrival of matrix taillights, arranged vertically, which are reminiscent of the style of certain Korean electric SUVs. These few aesthetic changes allowed the engineers to go from a Cx of 0.31 for the previous generation to 0,26 for the news.

Two electric versions at launch

Under the hood, the new Mini Countryman relies on electrification with several versions. The Countryman E is equipped with an engine of 204 hp and 250 Nmallowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds.

An SE ALL4 version, technically similar to the iX1, offers 313 hp and a combined torque of 494 Nm. This version sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds. In terms of autonomy, it is necessary to count 462 kilometers for the Countryman E and 433 kilometers for the Countryman SE ALL4, according to WLTP standards.

Mini has not officially communicated on the battery capacity, but it is probably similar to that of the iX1 with 66,45 kWh. In terms of charging, there is nothing revolutionary since, like the iX1, the Countryman can collect up to 130 kW in charging power, enough to go from 10 to 80% in 29 minutes on a fast terminal.

The manufacturer states that thermal and hybrid versions will be available laterwhile a diesel variant will also be there, despite the times.

Strict minimalism

Inside, the cleanly designed dashboard and the door panels covered with woven textile surfaces create a welcoming atmosphere. Eight different modes allow for light customization of the interior, combined with an adaptable user interface and new engine sounds.

The integration of the Mini Operating System 9, centered on touch and voice control, as well as a central OLED screen 24 cm in diameter, complete the package. The safe is advertised with a volume of 460 litersand up to 1,450 once the rear seat is folded down.

With four trim levels available – Essential, Classic, Favored and JCW – the new Mini Countryman will offer a rather varied range to its customers. It remains to be seen at what price this model will be available. The “smallest” electric version should start below 50,000 euros.
