Not content to be one of three prototypes of the legendary Impreza 22B, this Subaru belonged to none other than Colin McRae! As a result, it recently sold for €560,000 at auction!
This Impreza 22B recently became one of the most expensive Subarus in the world! Excuse a bit. It must be said that she was sold last weekend for the astronomical sum of 480,500 pounds sterling. This represents just over €560,000 at the current exchange rate! But when we take a closer look at her quite simply extraordinary pedigree, we may understand a little better why she has caused the auction to soar…
The Subaru Impreza 22B is a legendary vehicle, and not just for fans and enthusiasts of the Japanese brand. The only cut iteration of the model, it was produced specifically to homologate the vehicle and compete (and win) in the World Rally Championship in the late 90s. This version intended for the general public has a flat 4-cylinder turbo of 2.2 liters which develops 280 hp and 363 Nm of torque. Its power is distributed to the 4 wheels of the machine via a 5-speed manual gearbox. Not bad for a machine displaying only 1,270 kg on the scale! Result, this Japanese claims only 5.2 seconds to bring down the 0 to 100 km/h and can climb up to 248 km/h in top speed.
Subaru only produced a very (very) limited number of these Impreza 22Bs. Only 400 copies were assembled, well more or less… 3 additional units were indeed specially manufactured. They were given as gifts to people who made Subaru successful in the World Rally Championship. The first of these 3 copies was offered to David Lapworth who was in charge of the team that won the World Championship with this car. The second car was given to Nicky Grist, Colin McRae’s co-pilot at the time. And finally, the last vehicle was donated to Colin McRae in person. This is more exactly the car you have in front of you.
Yes, this Subaru Impreza 22B truly has an extraordinary pedigree. First by the history of the model, then by that of its first owner, but also thanks to its general condition. This vehicle is simply perfect, immaculate! It must be said that it has only traveled 11,971 km since it left the Japanese brand’s workshops! Eventually, perhaps it’s not so surprising that this Subaru Impreza 22B went for over half a million euros at Silverstone by Iconic Auctioneers…
