A study conducted by AAA DATA provides more information on the characteristics of end-of-life vehicles that are scrapped in France.
A study conducted by AAA DATA has made it possible to decipher what was the typical portrait of end-of-life vehicles (ELV) that populate car scrapyards in mainland France. Performed between 1is May 2022 and April 30, 2023, this study reveals astonishing data on the age, motorization, and owners of these vehicles destined for scrap.
For most vehicles on the road, the end of the journey is played out in a car junkyard. Whether the cars are badly damaged, impossible to repair, or their owners choose to separate to benefit from the conversion bonus, these ELVs are regulated by a European directive from the year 2000, as well as by the French Environmental Code of the same year.
The average age of vehicles sent for scrapping is 20,5 ans. Almost all scrapped vehicles are over 12 years old. Passenger cars represent the overwhelming majority of ELVs, with a share of 88%, followed far behind by utilities, motorcycles, and mopeds. Among these vehicles, an overwhelming majority runs on diesel, i.e. 65%.
It is mainly individuals, ie 96% of cases, who decide to send their end-of-life vehicle to its final destination. The rest comes from legal persons.
Important information emerges from this study: 38% of these owners meet the criteria required to benefit from the conversion bonus.
However, to be eligible, the destroyed vehicle must meet certain criteria, and the acquired vehicle must have a purchase price of less than 47,000 euros. Assuming that only half of these ELV owners, who invest in a new vehicle, have a tax income of less than 22,983 euros, only 17% are eligible for the conversion bonus.
