Leaving your car immobilized for several weeks, even several months, is not without risks for its mechanics or its bodywork. Here are the different measures to take to protect it as much as possible.
A car is made to be driven regularly, to keep its mechanics in shape and prevent damage to its bodywork. But if you have to leave your car stationary for several weeks, or even several months, it is not invented and special measures must be taken to best protect it over time. Here are our tips to prepare it for a long immobilization.
Wash your car thoroughly to remove dirt, insects, all pests and contaminants. You can also apply a protective wax to protect the paint.
Overinflate the tires slightly to avoid flat spots forming during standstill, which can put stress on your tyres.
For the same reason as mentioned above, you can raise the car on jack stands or lifting bars to prevent tire wear.
If your car doesn’t need constant power (like an alarm), disconnect the battery to prevent it from discharging. No need to remove it entirely, you can simply remove the pods.
Fill the fuel tank to prevent the formation of condensation in the tank. You can also add fuel stabilizer to prevent fuel deterioration.
If you have to park the car outside, use a breathable car cover to protect it from UV rays and bad weather.
If you have the possibility, park it in a garage or covered area to protect it from the weather and the sun.
apply a lubricant on the door hinges and locking mechanism to prevent corrosion and seizing. This advice applies especially if the immobilization is planned to last several months.
Check your car monthly to make sure that no mold, rust or abnormalities appear. Reconnect the battery and run it for a while to keep the mechanics in good condition.
