MG Cyberster (IAA Munich 2023): baptism of fire for the MG roadster

This is the first time that the MG Cyberster has been presented in continental Europe. The MG roadster makes its first walkabout in Munich, revealing some additional features.

Why did we specify “continental” in the preamble, and quite simply, because we have already been able to see the MG Cyberster during the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 14 in the UK.

Chinese manufacturers present in force!

At the Munich show which is being held right now, the Chinese manufacturers have made the trip and the least we can say is that they did not come empty-handed. Indeed, at IAAin addition to MG, we are entitled to the presence of WORLD, Leapmotors, Dongfeng or Geely.

In the case of MG, the Chinese brand, which is making a big breakthrough on the old continent, presents the European public with its three most efficient models, namely, the MG4 XPowerthe Marvel R Performance as well as the roadster Cyberster. It is the latter that interests us here.

A return to tradition?

MG has decided to make the Cyberster its floret. He is also the headliner of the MG stand at this Munich show. Since the MG brand was taken over in 2005 by the Chinese manufacturer SAIC Motor, the latter quickly moved away from its traditions. With this Cyberster, MG wouldn’t try to get closer to those roots by winking at the sports roadster of the time ?

According to the manufacturer, the MG Cyberster combines the heritage of a legendary line of convertibles with a modern design driven by an all-electric powertrain.

Power level, it’s serious!

The MG Cyberster will be available in two versions with one or two electric motors. The first is a version propulsion equipped with a single electric motor that develops a whopping 314 hp, which will already be quite enough to have fun behind the wheel.

As for the second version, the latter is offered in all-wheel drive. It is equipped with two electric motors developing a combined power of 544 hp.

With 1,985 kg on the scale, the Cyberster in its most powerful version achieves an impressive time in the exercise of 0 to 100 km/h, namely, 3.2 seconds.

Autonomy confirmed

For now, we only have MG’s measurements regarding range. In total, two batteries are offered ranging from 64 to 77 kWh. The Chinese brand announces a maximum autonomy of 579 km per CLTC cycle (Chinese equivalent of the WLTP cycle). To see if, with the European measures, the Cyberster still remains above the bar of 500 km range.

Spectacle and a real move upmarket

I have to say that the MG Cyberster catches the eye, even more in this red color. If SUV fashion is more than ever, the Cyberster offers a real change. The spectacular side is ensured by the installation on the part of MG of scissor door.

As for the technological side, it is ensured by the addition in the passenger compartment of three screens facing the driver. The cabin gives off an impression of quality with ubiquitous leather, the presence Alcantara in places and the addition of a flat steering wheel with inserts in aluminium Of the nicest effect.

On the price side, again, nothing official. However, the price should be around 60 000 €.
