Extreme heat: preparing for a long drive

For you as for your car, the high temperatures that are currently affecting us can be critical. Here are our tips if you are about to hit the road for a long drive in the middle of a dodger.

Even if the start of the school year is just around the corner, summer is still here! The wave of heatwave hitting France is not about to end : it should be in places between 34 and 38 degrees this weekend of September 9-10. Worse, the summer of 2023 was the hottest on record in the world. Faced with this unprecedented climatic phenomenon, we must redouble our vigilance and adopt preventive measures. This is all the more the case if you are about to take the road by carfor a long journey. Here are our tips to protect you, and protect your car as well as possible.

Control your car

Make sure the air conditioning system your car is working properly, check the levels of cooling liquid and make sure they are in line with what is recommended by the manufacturer. Also check the tire pressurebecause it can increase in hot weather!

Avoid the hottest hours

If possible, plan your trips early in the morning or at the end of the day to avoid the highest temperatures.

Protect yourself from the sun

Use a sun visor to protect your steering wheel, dashboard and seats when your car is stationary. You can find it in a car center or on the Internet for less than twenty euros. Wear light clothes, sunglasses and a hat to protect you from the sun’s rays when driving, in order to avoid heatstroke.

Stay hydrated

Bring enough water to stay hydrated during your journey.

Take regular breaks

The heat can make driving tiring. Take breaks every two hours to rest, hydrate and possibly refresh your face.

Use air conditioning sparingly

The air conditioning can overload your car’s engine just as much as give you a good “crunch”. Try to set it to a comfortable temperature, not too cold and not directly in your face. You can also, if necessary use the ventilation without activating the air conditioning.

Keep an eye on your engine

If your vehicle begins to overheatstop in a safe place, turn off the engine and wait for it to cool before continuing.

Stay informed

Finally, check the weather forecast before driving to avoid driving during extreme heat waves.
