Like Tesla, Lucid is preparing an electric car at around 45,000 euros

The CEO of Lucid has announced his desire to market a car capable of competing with the Model 3 and Model Y, but it will not arrive for many years.

Peter Rawlinson, the CEO of Lucid Motors, has announced that he wants to expand his range of electric cars with a more affordable model whose starting price would be around 50,000 dollars (about 46,600 euros). The idea is obviously to attack (again) Tesla, even on the cheapest models currently on the market, the Model 3 and Model Y.

The Californian start-up currently has only one car in its range with the Air sedan, whose base price in the United States starts from 82,400 dollars (about 77,000 euros). For the most exclusive and powerful, the Lucid Air Sapphire, the price is stratospheric and close to 250,000 dollars (232,900 euros).

The anti Tesla Model 3 and Model Y at $50,000

In an interview with ABC NewsPeter Rawlinson addressed several topics regarding the current automotive landscape, sharing his views on range anxiety and charging infrastructure.

He then said that the brand’s goal was to launch a relatively affordable electric vehicle. He added that a high-end product at the start is necessary to attract investment. This is also somewhat the path followed by Tesla with the Model S and the Model X first, then the Model 3 and the Model Y then.

The idea is to launch an electric vehicle at around $50,000, “in the heart of Tesla Model 3 and Model Y territory”. Based on current pricing, this price is close to the higher end of the Model 3 and Model Y price range, but it would appear to be the most Lucid can do in terms of price.

A long way to an “economical” and electric car

In June 2023, Lucid announced that it had raised three billion dollars (2.8 billion euros), most of which from the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, the main shareholder of Lucid Motors with more than 60% of its shares. Much of this money could be used precisely for the development of the “little Lucid”since the second planned vehicle, the large SUV, should share much of its bases with the Air sedan.

During the interview, Peter Rawlinson also talked about the NACS connector provided by Tesla. Curiously, it was Peter Rawlinson himself, who is a former Tesla employee, who played a key role in the development of this connector. But Lucid remains one of the few makers that has yet to say it will adopt it. The leader dismissed the subject stating that he was ” open minded “ and he was considering ” All “. But given Elon Musk’s recent statements to Lucid, perhaps Peter Rawlinson can’t see himself getting closer to Tesla in the near future.
