The Government has announced the eligibility conditions for the ecological bonus for 2024, and there will be changes. The new scale, which now takes into account an eco-score in the production process, will condemn several electric models, including a very famous starlet…
It is government assistance which is welcome to encourage people to replace their car by a new model, and above all less polluting. The ecological bonus rewards buyers who make the effort to purchase a new car using alternative energy to gasoline or diesel. Previously, plug-in hybrid models were eligible, but now only electric cars (battery or hydrogen) can benefit. It amounts to €5,000 maximum, or €7,000 for French people whose reference tax income per unit is less than €14,090. The car in question must have a list sale price of less than €47,000, and a curb weight of less than 2.4 tonnes.
In any case, this is the scale that currently applies for the year 2023. But all this should soon change, the Government having announced future developments for the ecological bonus/malus in 2024. From 1is Next January, a score will come into effect in the bonus calculation. Until now, the State did not distinguish between electric models produced locally and those assembled outside the European Union. This is precisely what will change.
The State seeks to reward manufacturers who make the effort to produce as close as possible to the EUwith production methods and materials that limit the carbon footprint of the production cycle. “Today, we have companies in France and Europe that manufacture by reducing their greenhouse gas emissions, and on the other side of the world, we manufacture with coal-fired electricity with a footprint very high environmental impact,” explained the Minister of Ecology Agnès Pannier-Runacher.
This new scale will take into account in particular the energy used to operate the factory (coal, nuclear, gas, etc.). But also the carbon footprint of the transport of the finished vehiclethat of intermediate production processesof battery chemistry or even the raw materials used. New constraints which directly threaten certain models, which currently benefit from them. These include in particular the models assembled in China and distributed in Europe. Dacia Spring, MG4, BYD Atto 3, Leapmotor T03 or even the next Volvo EX30, all assembled in China, would for example be affected. Conversely, the Renault R4, R5 and Scénic E-Tech, Peugeot e-308 and e-3008, Fiat 500 and the Ford Explorer will continue to benefit, being all planned to be assembled in Europe…
