While the price of fuel is at its highest, the government is asking TotalEnergies to do something for customers.
For several months, the price of fuel has continued to rise, once again reaching prices close to those recorded at the start of the war in Ukraine. The cause is the drop in oil production, the increase in demand as well as taxation. And for good reason, we must not forget that taxes represent 60% of the price of the liter, and that they are therefore indexed to the latter. The more expensive the fuel, the higher the VAT therefore, even if the State ensures that these revenues do not benefit it. It’s still a little hard to believe it. Either way, motorists can’t take it anymore and are calling on the government to act.
The French are penalized by disruptions in the supply of service stations.

But the latter still categorically refuses to implement a discount, affirming that it is up to distributors to take action to reduce their margins and the prices displayed. Bruno le Maire, Minister of the Economy, spoke on this subject on France Info, and once again asked TotalEnergies to make an effort. He explains in fact that “ I hope that TotalEnergies, which has made a commitment to cap the prices of all fuels, diesel and gasoline, at 1.99 euros until the end of the year, extends this cap beyond December 31, 2023 (…) TotalEnergies is the only major French oil tanker what we have left, it must be an asset« .
The French company had in fact announced pextend the price cap of all fuels at its service stations at 1.99 euros per liter until the end of the year. But the government wants even more, while the latter does not want to make the slightest gesture for motorists. The latter, however, ask the provision of assistance, which would cost the State too much according to the policies. For his part, Bruno Le Maire explains that he does not want “ pay for the oil diplomacy of Mr. (Vladimir) Putin and Saudi Arabia« .
