Stellantis: a first ultra-modern battery center

Stellantis has just inaugurated its first ultra-modern battery center in Turin, Italy, which required an investment of 40 million euros.

As part of its electrification strategy, Stellar is currently transforming its production and engineering sites around the world. Within the industrial site of Mirafiorilocated in Turin, Italy, the automobile group has just inaugurated a first battery center ultra modern, named « Battery Technology Center ».

“Today, we have a unique opportunity: to redefine mobility by offering sustainable and intelligent solutions to our customers”declared on this occasion Ned Curic, Chief Engineering and Technology Officer of Stellantis: “Our new Battery Technology Center at Mirafiori allows us to bring together the tools and talent we need to design, test and control in order to produce cutting-edge products capable of meeting our customers’ expectations and accelerating the deployment provision of high-performance electric vehicles to all consumers around the world. »

A battery center in Italy

The Battery Technology Center in Mirafiori is the largest in Italy and one of the most important in Europe, with an area of 8.000 m² and more than a hundred employees. It required an investment of 40 million eurosand will allow Stellantis to design, develop and test the different components of a battery: battery packs, modules, high voltage cells or even software, which will be found on its future electric vehicles.

Stellantis will carry out climate resistance tests, longevity tests, development and calibration of battery management system software, as well as disassembly of packs and cells for analysis. The battery center houses 32 climatic test chambersincluding 24 testing rooms for battery packs, and 8 rooms for battery cells.

These chambers will monitor humidity and temperature, with ranges from -40 to 60°C, and test up to 47 battery packs and 96 cells at the same time. The electrical system can manage up to 1.2 kV and 2.2 MW of energy per test chamber.

6 gigafactories around the world

The Mirafiori technology center will also be responsible for selecting innovative battery chemistries for tomorrow’s models, and characterizing cell behavior for development purposes.

Stellantis is also building another Battery Technology Center in North America, which will be located in Windsor, in the province of Ontario in Canada: this future site will enrich Stellantis’ international battery production and development network, which will include less than 6 gigafactories (battery factories).
