After Fiat, Volkswagen and Citroën, Opel will also have its “cheap” electric car

Opel will also offer an electric car in the coming months for less than 25,000 euros. It will undoubtedly share many elements with the future Citroën ë-C3.

If you are looking for a 100% electric city car equivalent to a Peugeot 208 or a Citroën C3, you will have to put your hand in your wallet. Indeed, for example, the Peugeot e-208 starts at a price of 34,800 euros in its base version, while the electric Volkswagen e-Up, a lower category car, starts at 28,030 euros. Government aid helps alleviate the pain, but it remains fundamentally expensive.

But within a few months, we will see a wave of models “from 25,000 euros” arrive. Volkswagen plans to launch its ID.2 in 2025, an electric city car with a base price of less than 25,000 euros. Citroën is preparing to present the electric ë-C3, which should also be offered for less than 25,000 euros, even before the end of this year.

A new Opel Corsa in the pipeline?

This downward price trend is not limited to these two brands. The Stellantis group recently announced that Fiat is preparing the launch of an electric Panda at the same price for the following year. In addition, Opel, a brand under the Stellantis umbrella, has also confirmed its commitment to this new category of affordable electric city cars, planning to introduce a similar model from 2026.

For comparison, the current base price of the Opel Corsa Electric is 36,050 euros, which places it well above the 25,000 euro range that these manufacturers are targeting.

Renault already out of the race?

In this battle for the cheapest electric car, it is the Dacia Spring which currently dominates with a base price below 23,000 euros excluding bonuses. Unfortunately, it could quickly be overtaken by these famous electric cars for less than 25,000 euros that are arriving, since it generally offers the strict minimum for a car, not to mention that its degree of versatility is questionable.

For its part, Renault has already withdrawn from the price race, since its R5 will probably not be available under 25,000 euros as previously indicated by the diamond firm. Renault now communicates on a price “less than 30,000 euros”.
