Section radars: soon also used for construction sites?

Radars are increasingly present on our roads and on all the fields. And it could continue to get worse in the future.

Indeed, section radars will be used on highway construction sites from 2024. But what about the situation? In France ?

What is a section radar?

As a reminder, a section radar serves to enforce speed on a highway. If a driver overtakes maximum speed authorized, it will be flasher.

However, areas under construction are not yet equipped with this technology. And yet, most motorists do not necessarily respect the speed in these areas.

In any case, this is what was demonstrated in a recent study of the Vinci Foundation. Indeed, according to the study, 7 out of 10 motorists would not slow down in work areas.

This is therefore an area where accidents are likely and where the damage can be importants.

An innovative idea

When a motorist driving at too high a speed a work zonehe puts himself in danger but also other motorists as well as the agents who work.

In some cases, an area under construction on the highway can go up to more than 10 kilometers. In Belgium, a solution was found: put two Lidarsa at the entrance and an to the output.

The two would communicate with each other in order to verbalize motorists who overtake the authorized speedwhich is often 70 km/h.

An upcoming arrival in France?

Belgium should welcome this system in 2024. The idea is not new but son application was delayed following the war in Ukraine and the shortage lice or fleas.

Ces machines will be able to change the maximum speed themselves to respect depending on the conditions, for example.

In France, radars construction sites are installed during the work. Last example to date: the A1 motorway on the Lille side with 3 machines in total.

Moon of them was even particularly effective according to the reactions authorities locales.

On the other hand, nothing indicates an upcoming arrival of Lidar technology in France. The situation will certainly change if it proves effective in Belgium.
