Smart #2 and #4: what do these next models have in store for us?

After several years of doubt, Smart finally displays iron ambitions. Formerly famous for its small two-seater, the Fortwo, which was then assembled in France, the German brand has profoundly changed its philosophy. Since the Chinese automobile group Geely increased its stake in the company to 50%, Smart became a Sino-German joint venture, shared between Mercedes-Benz and Geely. Result: production relocated to China, the elimination of the Forfour, and a range converted to 100% electric. It thus benefits from the know-how and engineering of Geely in this technology, which has already implemented the same strategy at Volvo and Lotus for example.

Smart #1 and #3: heading towards electric

The very first model to embody this spiritual shift (and technological) is called Smart #1 (pronounced “Hashtag one”). This is a crossover urbain (segment B) with a very different style from the first Smarts that we know. Same observation under the hood, where the engines 272 and 428 horsepower offered are light years away from the minicity car of yesteryear. Its autonomy peaks at 440 kilometers. As news never arrives alone, Smart gave it a big brother this year: #3 ! It is a compact model (C segment) which adopts a coupe look that is very popular in this niche. It is based on the same SEA (Geely) platform as its little brother, and offers the same engines and levels of autonomy…

Smart #2 and #4: return to the origins

Smart is already preparing the sequel! The manufacturer aims to market a new model every year. By 2025, the next ones will be called #2 and #4. The #2 will be a “real” Smart, in that it will replace the current Fortwo to renew it into a much more modern electric two-seater (the current one already dates from 2014). His style could heavily inspired by the Vision EQ Fortwo concept, presented in 2017. Like its peers, it will be based on Geely mechanics, and could borrow several components from the current Geely Panda Mini EV. Its big sister #4 will be positioned in the C segment, not as a crossover, but as a “traditional” 5-door sedan. She could in fact take up the torch of the Mercedes A Class, which the manufacturer plans to remove from the catalog.
