This Porsche could become the most expensive 911 in history

A Porsche Carrera RSR, a 911 model from the 70s, recently went up for auction. His estimate is mind-blowing.

It has already happened more than once that Porsche models have reached phenomenal sums at auction. This is, for example, the case of a Porsche 956 which was sold for nearly 10 million euros in 2015. Or even a Porsche 917/10which went for no less than 5.4 million euros in 2012.

On September 9, a new Porsche at an inestimable price went to an auction. This time it was a Porsche Carrera RSR Martini Racing, a Porsche 911 model. Here again, 911s can stand out with insane prices. In March 2017, a 911 GT1 Strassenversion had also been sold for more than five million euros by Gooding & Company.

A Porsche 911 estimated between 4.4 and 6.7 million euros

The Porsche mise en vente last September 9 by Bonhams was estimated at a potentially much higher value than the 911 GT1 Strassenversion. The company was asking for a price located between 4.4 and 6.7 million euros. The range was thus particularly wide, but clearly illustrated the extent to which this vehicle is sought after by certain collectors.

This high value can be explained by the history of this Porsche Carrera RSR. She is known for having finished in fourth position in the 1973 24 Hours of Le Mans, just behind three open-cockpit prototypes – two Matra-Simca and a Ferrari. The 911 then continued to participate in competitions, particularly the Osterreichring 1000 km and the Watkins Glen Six Hours in New York. It was also present in the 1974 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but technical difficulties ended his short career.

The most expensive 911 in history?

After its retirement from motor racing, the Martini Racing Porsche Carrera RSR continued its life in the hands of collectors. As Bonhams attests, it was verified by Porsche’s principal engineer, Norbert Singer. He thus declared that it is a question of the authentic Porsche 911 of the 1973 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Since the auction dates from September 9, it has probably already been concluded. However, the Bonhams site has still not updated the status of this Porsche Carrera RSR. For the moment, it is therefore not certain that she has found a new owner. If it has been sold, the price is also not known. So the question still remains unanswered: has it become the most expensive 911 in history?
