Virtual reality will soon arrive on car windshields, with essential information for the driver.
We knew about ‘head-up displays’, which indicated a lot of information on the windshield, now Apple wants to go further. By revealing the beginnings of its augmented reality screen with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the apple brand has one more step towards the release of its new car.
The American technology giant is preparing an electric vehicle capable of competing in the zero-emission car market, where Xiaomi and Sony are also present. And the least we can say is that the options this car will offer promise to be innovative and futuristic. Even if the work carried out on this car for Tim Cook’s company remains discreet for the moment, leaks reveal that a patent concerning an interactive windshield was filed by Apple. The first patent applications date back to 2015 and they concern applications capable of create augmented reality on a car windshield.

Apple’s augmented reality system for cars would, according to leaks, rely on a variety of sensors capable of collecting information about the vehicle’s environment. To do this, visible light cameras and infrared cameras, as well as ultrasonic scanning devices to create a three-dimensional image of the car’s surroundings, will be placed everywhere. Of the geographic positioning and radar devices are also considered essential for the operation of this technology.
Augmented reality (AR) allows the user to interact between the virtual and the physical, with the aim of driving safety.

Superimposing or highlighting signs containing relevant information, or even revealing a navigation destination in advance when it is not yet visible, will also be of interest to the driver. Here is an example of what could be the system once applied to a windshield :
Moreover, speed bumps could be displayed on the windshield if the driver drives too fast. Analysts are now waiting to see if the augmented reality screen will have decent quality in order to actually help the motorist behind the wheel. And you what do you think ?
