Bugatti reveals the underside of its Bolide, a model based on a carbon fiber monocoque meeting LMH and LMDh standards.
Bugatti has published technical specifications, photos and new information on the Bolide, its most extreme supercar ever designed and solely dedicated to the track.
According to the brand, it is not “simply” a Chiron specially designed for the circuit. Molsheim engineers have completely redesigned the chassis with, now, a carbon fiber monocoque. The images published by the manufacturer highlight the underpinnings of this monster on four wheels.
The new chassis, designed especially for the Bolide, is not only more rigid compared to that of the Chiron, but it has also been developed to meet to LMH and LMDh regulations dedicated to endurance cars.
According to information provided by Bugatti, to obtain FIA approval, the Bolide had to pass a test involving the application of a load of 7.5 tonnes on the A-pillar, without exceeding a deflection of 50 mm at the point application of the load. But that’s not all. The surrounding structure, within a 100 mm radius of this point, also had to withstand the same load.
The entire Bolide showed no cracks during the test while passing other tests with flying colors. In the rollover test, for example, a force of 12 tonnes was applied to the B-pillar. In another test, a longitudinal load of 6 tonnes was applied to the carbon fiber monocoque, in an attempt to simulate a rollover ending with a rear-end impact against a barrier.
Compared to the Chiron classic, the changes to the chassis also required some mechanical modifications in order to accommodate the engine. Compared to the “standard” model, the 8.0-liter W16 with its four turbochargers has been positioned 60 millimeters further forward, in order to maintain good weight distribution.
New centrally-mounted one-piece alloy wheels, fitted with custom-made Michelin Pilot Sport tires, complete the package. Finally, in the event of a problem, the car has been equipped with a sophisticated fire extinguishing system from the military world. The Bugatti Bolide will only be built 40 copies and the first customers will receive it during 2024.
