Fuel: the State refuses to enrich itself at the expense of the French

While the price of fuel is very high, the government is defending itself from pocketing a jackpot and is putting things straight.

When will the situation finally get better? A priori, this should not be the case right away. Indeed, the price of fuel has risen sharply over the past two months, and there is nothing to suggest that it will begin to fall soon. Because the reasons for this increase are numerous, between the war in Ukraine, the drop in production and the increase in demand. A very explosive cocktail which has the effect of making soaring prices at gas stations. To the point of making the lives of French motorists very complicated.

No profits

But one of the reasons explaining these high prices is also taxation. In fact, on a liter of gasoline or diesel, we pay around 60% taxes. And the government absolutely does not want to make the slightest move to reduce this figure. If motorists as well as Xavier Bertrant accuse the State of making money on their backs, the Ministry of the Economy wanted to defend itself. The latter then affirms loud and clear that “there is no jackpot”. While explaining that “ the rise in fuel prices resulted in an increase in VAT revenue on fuels used by households of around 2 billion euros in 2022 and 2 billion euros in 2023« .

A question of perspective

The State wants to qualify by explaining that the discounts on fuel prices at the same time cost no less than 7.5 billion euros last year. While the compensation of 100 euros represented an expense of half a billion euros.
