The Japanese group is working on new battery technologies which will initially make it possible to reach 800, then 1,000 and even 1,200 km of autonomy! Toyota also expects production costs to be up to 40% lower.
Toyota, king of hybrids, recently went all-electric with its bZ4X. Unfortunately for the Japanese giant, their SUV is not really at the top of its category… In order to improve their range of battery vehicles, the manufacturer has drawn up a roadmap which extends from 2026 to 2028. And the least we can say is that Toyota, but also Lexus, have great ambitions!
The Japanese group is currently working on 3 new technologies including the famous solid-state batteries. All will allow electric Toyotas to have greater autonomy and faster charging for reduced costs. The first of these technologies should equip the group’s electric vehicles from 2026. It will allow a 20% cost reduction compared to the current bZ4X which currently starts from €55,000 in France. Cars equipped with its batteries will also only take 20 minutes to go from 10 to 80% battery level. But the most important thing is that their autonomy should exceed 800 km!
Between 2026 and 2027, Toyota will offer new electric vehicles with 20% more autonomy compared to the bZ4X which currently has a maximum range of 503 km. In other words, a maximum range of more than 600 km. But the manufacturer’s objective is not to go further with this technology. Above all, he wants to offer more affordable vehicles thanks to these new batteries. The brand announces a 40% cost reduction compared to its current SUV. Enough to potentially offer an electric vehicle around €30,000.
Toyota also wants to continue to advance these new batteries. Between 2027 and 2028, the manufacturer will therefore offer an electric vehicle exceeding 1,000 km of autonomyeven lighter, but also 10% cheaper to produce. At the same time, the famous solid-state batteries will finally arrive. They should allow Toyota to offer electric vehicles with up to 1,200 km of range and going from 10 to 80% battery level in just 10 minutes! This is tempting! Let’s hope that Toyota manages to apply this roadmap…
