Android Automotive: these applications are finally appearing

Google is taking advantage of the Detroit show to announce the arrival of new applications for Android Automotive users, as well as Android Auto.

The 2023 Detroit Motor Show opens its doors from September 13 to 24 this year, and it is an opportunity to find new automotive products, but also in the world of on-board technologies. Google is taking advantage of this great North American mass to announce the arrival of new apps for users of its in-car services.

First of all, for Android Auto users, apps Webex from Cisco and Zoom can now be used in the car, which will provide new possibilities for audio calls on the go. Now, users of these apps will be able to easily and securely join scheduled meetings and conference calls, directly from their car’s screen, without touching their phone while driving.

New applications on Android Automotive (Google built-in)

New apps are also available for vehicles with an Android Automotive infotainment system, also known as « cars with Google built-in » (or “cars with integrated Google”) by the American giant. Indeed, Amazon Prime Video is now available for download on Google Play for certain models of Renault, Polestar and Volvo, while other manufacturers will follow.

Other applications are now compatible with use in the car, such as Vivaldi, an Internet browser based on Chromium, also deployed for download on the Google Play embedded application store. Soon, the application Weather Channel will also be available in car, which will allow motorists to obtain hourly weather forecasts, tracking alerts or even radar informing of upcoming weather conditions.

Unlock your car with your smartphone

Google also announced the development of support for digital car key, which allows you to unlock, lock and start your car, simply with your phone. It is also possible to share your car’s digital key with family and friends, on Android and iOS.

Already available in several European countries, digital car key support is now rolling out to select Hyundai, Genesis and Kia models in the US, Canada and Korea, for drivers with compatible Pixel and Samsung devices , like the Pixel 7 Pro or the Samsung Galaxy S23+. Other car manufacturers and other compatible smartphones will be announced by next year.
