By 2030, two out of three new cars sold worldwide could be electric

A recent study shows that the drop in battery prices, which will lead to lower car prices, will help increase sales of new electric cars.

According to a recent study, thanks to the fall in the price of batteries, electric vehicles could soon be at the same price as their thermal equivalents. More precisely, this balance could be reached in 2024 in Europe and in 2026 in the United States.

Furthermore, this same study states that two-thirds of global car sales will be electric vehicles by 2030.

Will the price of electric cars really fall?

The study by the American energy research and studies center Rocky Mountain Institute specifies that the cost of batteries will be halved this decade, going from 151 dollars per kWh (around 140 euros) in 2022, to between 60 and 90 dollars per kWh (between 57 and 83 euros). Thus, still according to this study, “for the first time, electric vehicles will be as ‘affordable’ as thermal cars in all markets by 2030”.

It is precisely the price of batteries that will play a key role, particularly because their cost represents 40% of the price of an electric car. Investments by manufacturers in new materials and software will keep prices low, which should open up new horizons for electric cars.

Constantly increasing sales

According to figures published by Rocky Mountain Institute, the rapid growth of electric models in Europe and China “implies that electric car sales will increase at least sixfold by 2030, to reach a market share of between 62% and 86% of sales”.

Sales of zero-emission vehicles in the European Union increased by almost 61% in July compared to the same month in 2022, accounting for 13.6% of all car sales.

Let us point out, however, that sales of electric cars in Europe are not “homogeneous” in all countries. If Germany, France and the Benelux countries are experiencing rapid growth, the same is not true for Italy, for example, which has remained anchored for several years at still very low percentages, around from 3 to 5%, the fault in particular of a charging network of relatively relative density.
