Volkswagen presents its third generation of Tiguan, with an emphasis on electrification and several interesting hybrid versions. Will this be enough to overshadow the new Peugeot 3008 in France?
For a long time, the Volkswagen Golf was the best-selling car of the German brand. But that was before the advent of SUVs. And in fact, the Volkswagen Tiguan has become the Volkswagen group’s best-selling model in recent years, with more than 7.5 million cars produced since the presentation of the first generation in 2007.
Volkswagen is today presenting the third generation to us, with some notable developments, but no major revolutions compared to the previous generation.
The new Volkswagen Tiguan 2024 measures 4.54 meters long (+3 cm compared to the previous model), 1.64 meters high, 1.84 meters wide, with the same wheelbase as the previous model, namely 2.68 meters, and a Cd reduced from 0.33 to 0 ,28.
The MQB Evo modular platform has evolved to give more space inside and obtain a larger capacity trunk, with 652 liters announced, evening 37 liters more than the current Tiguan.
The exterior design of the new Tiguan has also changed. The changes focus on the lights, with technology from the Volkswagen Touareg and 19,200 multipixel LEDs for each Matrix IQ.Light2 HD headlight, an acronym which means “High Definition”.
The bodywork has more fluid, softer shapes, with less protruding edges than in the past. The rims range from 17 to 20 inches, depending on the finish. On the sides, we notice that the rib at the height of the door handles is less pronounced than that of the previous Tiguan. The rear lights are also LED, with a thin border that connects the optics across the entire width of the body.
The interior of the new Volkswagen Tiguan has also been redesigned with the introduction of the latest MIB4 software, which was first presented on the Volkswagen ID.7.
The infotainment screen in the center of the dashboard is between 13 inches and 15 inches, again depending on the finish. The menus and graphics are new. Behind the steering wheel is a new 10.25-inch digital instrument panel.
All versions of the new Volkswagen Tiguan are equipped as standard with the DSG double-clutch automatic transmission, with six speeds on the PHEV versions and seven speeds on the other units.
The new Tiguan is available with thermal engines, namely the 2.0-litre TSI four-cylinder turbo petrol from 204 ch, 320 Nm and two-wheel drive, or the variant of 265 ch, 400 Nm and four-wheel drive. On the diesel side, Volkswagen offers a 2.0 liter TDI of 150 hp and 360 Nm in traction, or with 193 ch, 400 Nm and four-wheel drive. The Tiguan is offered with two engines equipped with 48V mild hybridization with eTSI available in 130 or 150 hp.
The eHybrid version, that is to say the plug-in hybrid, offers up to 100 km of autonomy in electric mode. On this new Tiguan PHEV, instead of the previous 1.4 liter TSI, we find a 1.5 liter TSI petrol engine with variable geometry turbo of 150 hp and 250 Nm, coupled to an integrated electric motor of 115 hp and 330 Nm to the gearbox, for a total power of 204 hp and 350 Nm of torque. Another version of 272 hp and 400 Nm is also there, and the 1.5 liter TSI develops 177 hp and 250 Nm.
The “net” capacity of the battery is 19,7 kWh (on the previous version, it was 10.6 kWh) and the AC charging power is 11 kW (compared to 3.6 kW previously). 50 kW DC DC charging (which wasn’t available on the previous Tiguan) is included, and it takes around 25 minutes to recharge from 10% to 80%.
Its base price has been set at 36,600 euros in Germany, which suggests an entry ticket for less than 40,000 euros in France.
No seven-seater version is planned, the previous generation Tiguan Allspace will be replaced by the Tayron, a family model planned for 2025.
