Renault-Nissan Alliance: the contours of this new beginning

Discover the latest developments in the Renault-Nissan Alliance and the new phase of their partnership.

After 24 years of asymmetrical partnership, Renault and Nissan have emerged into a new era of their alliance, marking the beginning of a more egalitarian and less fusional chapter. This transition, which also includes Mitsubishi Motors since 2016, aims to establish more balanced, equitable, and effective governance, as per the joint announcement from the two manufacturers, specifying that the New Alliance Agreement between Renault Group and Nissan has come into force. This status revision reflects a shift towards a more balanced and equitable partnership, marking an end to Renault’s long domination of the Alliance.

A journey strewn with pitfalls

The history of this alliance has been marked by complications, including unexpected changes in the ownership structure and leadership challenges. However, the leaders of Renault and Nissan have stressed the importance of this new era, characterized by an “agreement of equals.” The move towards a more balanced alliance will focus on joint projects in various regions, intended to generate substantial value for each partner.

Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi have already collaborated on numerous vehicles and announced significant investments in Renault’s electric entity.

A new marriage contract before a real divorce?

Beyond the financial aspects, this development has practical implications, notably the end of file and data sharing between Renault and Nissan, as well as the dissolution of their common purchasing center. Concerns relate to the preservation of jobs and sites in France, with Renault assuring that no one would be made redundant following the dissolution of the joint purchasing center and that the vehicles manufactured by Renault for Nissan would continue to be produced in French factories.
