Stellantis: Discontent Rises Against the 1.2L Puretech Unit!

The 1.2L Puretech petrol unit (Citroën, DS, Peugeot, Opel) is facing rising discontent among 15,000 owners due to frequent oil overconsumption leading to potential engine failure.

Despite being awarded four titles as the Best Engine of the Year in its category from 2015 to 2018, the 1.2L Puretech engine from Stellantis is under scrutiny for its performance, consumption, and most importantly, reliability. The engine’s design, which uses engine oil to lubricate the timing belt and reduce internal friction, has led to excessive oil consumption, premature wear of the belt, and in some cases, engine failure.

Stellantis Turns a Deaf Ear; Owners Mobilize

In 2020, the engine was subject to a large-scale recall campaign affecting models such as Peugeot 208, 308, 3008, and Citroën C3, C4 Cactus, Berlingo, and the Picasso monovolume family. A similar issue reoccurred in December 2022, with Citroën reluctantly acknowledging the recurring problem. However, Stellantis has so far refused fair compensation for the affected owners, citing reasons such as the vehicle’s age or maintenance outside the network. In response, the 15,000 affected members have come together in the Facebook group “PSA 1.2L Puretech Problems.”

A collective action has been initiated by Maître Christophe Leguevaques, a lawyer at the Paris bar, on the MyLeo platform to negotiate with Stellantis for substantial support, and if unsuccessful, prepare legal action. Owners are urged to register on the platform before December 31 to seek a resolution by the first quarter of 2024. In case of failure, legal recourse is being considered. Notably, Maître Leguevaques has previously led the “motorgate,” an evidentiary summary against Renault-Nissan concerning issues with the 1.2 TCE engines from 2012 to 2016.

Which Models Are Affected?

The affected models include Citroën C3, C3 Picasso, C4, C4 Cactus, C4 Picasso, C4 Spacetourer, and Berlingo; DS3 Crossback, DS4, and DS7 Crossback; Peugeot 208, 308, 508, 2008, 3008, 5008, Partner, and Rifter; and Opel Mokka, Crossland (X), and Grandland (X).
