In Cambrai, police arrest motorists for respecting the Highway Code

Last Tuesday, the Cambrai police carried out an unusual operation to control the speed of motorists.

It is rarely a good sign to get arrested by the police while driving. Typically, this intervention means that a fine – or worse – will follow. Except this week, in Cambrai. Local police launched a vast operation to control motorists in this town in northern France last Tuesday. The objective was clear: control speeding drivers.

Last week, a first traffic control operation was carried out by the Cambrai police. The trigger was a fatal accident, which occurred in the city recently. Last Tuesday, officers then set up again with binoculars to check the speed of local drivers. But nothing turned out the way they imagined.

Contrary to what the police thought, their radar binoculars hardly detected any violations. Several agents had, more precisely, installed themselves on a portion of the road limited to 40 km/h. And it turned out that almost all the drivers who passed by that day respected the imposed speed limit. Only two motorists were fined for speeding.

Another car owner was penalized for lack of insurance and technical control. Apart from these two fines, no one violated the Highway Code, even though 32 motorists (not counting the three others fined) were stopped. In fact, they followed the rules perfectly. And the police officers decided to reward them.

Cambrai nonsense as a reward

The police officers’ control, at the beginning, turned out to be very classic. The motorists had not violated the Highway Code in any way. Yet they did not escape a check of “documents relating to the driving of a land motor vehicle”. Of course, it is always possible that a motorist may not have a valid driving license.

But once this check was successfully passed by the 32 motorists in question, they were rewarded by the police for having respected the Highway Code. According to 20Minutes, the agents even gave them a small gift: nonsense from Cambrai! These were offered by the manufacturer. A decidedly unusual day for Cambrai drivers.
