Snow tires: in which foreign countries are they compulsory?





If you want to travel abroad in winter, it is important to know whether or not snow tires are mandatory on the road. Regulations keep changing of a region to the other. Hard to find yourself there when we decide to voyager by car in Europe. so here’s the countries where snow tires are compulsory on the Old Continent and the countries without any obligation.

Countries where snow tires are compulsory

Let’s start with the countries where snow tires are mandatory. It’s necessary differentiate two types. On the one hand, countries where snow tires are mandatory during a certain duration. This is the case of :

  • Bulgaria : from November 15 to March 1
  • Estonia : from December 1 to March 31
  • Croatia : from November 15 to April 15
  • Latvia : from December 1 to March 1
  • Lithuania : from November 10 to April 1
  • Slovenia : from November 15 to March 15
  • Sweden : from December 1 to March 31

On the other side, we have the countries which require motorists to wear snow tires but only under certain conditions, like ice for example. We then find:

  • Germany
  • Austria
  • Finland
  • Iceland
  • The Luxembourg
  • Norway
  • The Czech Republic
  • Romania
  • Slovakia

Countries with very specific signage

And Europe, 3 pays do not require motorists to use snow tires except in case of signage very precise. We therefore find here in a first time France. Indeed, in the municipalities determined by the prefects of 34 departmentsareas are delimited by Signs and then force motorists to wear the right tires. Same scenario in Spain Thus than in Italy. Among our Italian neighbors, the signs require snow tires to be fitted only between November 15 and April 15.

Countries where there is no obligation

Finally some countries do not have no obligation regarding snow tires. Here is the list countries :

  • Belgium
  • Chypre
  • Denmark
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Ireland
  • Painted
  • Poland
  • The Netherlands
  • Portugal
  • The United Kingdom
