Many travelers dream of covering kilometers without stopping at tolls. This dream will soon become a partial reality on the motorways linking Paris to Normandy, specifically the A13 and the A14. The tolls will not disappear, but the toll barriers will be removed, similar to what has been done for other motorways in Europe.
By the end of 2024, the Paris-Normandy highways will transition to a model without toll barriers, offering drivers “a more fluid and efficient experience.” The new system is expected to save users up to 30 minutes during peak traffic times. A total of 120 million euros has been invested in this project.
The plan is to replace traditional tolls with automatic systems capable of detecting vehicles’ license plates. Payments can be made automatically using an electronic toll badge or within 72 hours following passage for those who do not have this device.
Users will need to get used to this new system, as the first experiences on the A79 motorway have been inconclusive. Hundreds of thousands of cases of payment defaults were opened due to motorists’ lack of knowledge about the payment process. If this system is implemented across the entire French network, a major communication campaign will be essential to inform users of the significant change and its advantages and constraints.
