Similar to certain luxury cars, Tesla will enforce a one-year ownership requirement for customers who purchase the Cybertruck in order to prevent speculative activity.
If you buy a Tesla Cybertruck, you will not be able to resell it immediately. The American company has announced that purchasers of the electric pick-up must remain the owner for at least one year. This clause is included in the general terms of sale for all Tesla vehicles, with a specific paragraph added for the Cybertruck.
There is a small exception, however. If there is a genuine need to sell the Cybertruck within the first year, the owner can contact a dealer to request permission. The seller may decide to repurchase the vehicle or the brand may provide written authorization to sell to a third party.
If someone sells their Cybertruck before the end of the year without following the procedure, they risk a fine of $50,000 (around 46,800 euros) and may also be denied the ability to purchase other vehicles from Tesla in the future.
This system is not unique, as other prestigious brands have similar policies. Porsche implemented a rental system for its 911 S/T, while Ford had a similar process for its GT a few years ago.
The Cybertruck sales contract specifies: “You agree not to sell the vehicle within the first year following the delivery date. If an exception is warranted, the owner must notify Tesla in writing and allow a reasonable period for repurchase.”
If Tesla refuses to purchase the vehicle, the owner may resell it with written consent from the company, with potential financial consequences for non-compliance.
Prior to the November 30 event, where Tesla will begin deliveries and release detailed technical information about the pickup, the Cybertruck has been observed up close in its final form. There have been reports of quality defects in the pre-series version, raising concerns before the first deliveries.
