The village baker set fire to the neighborhood cars

We don’t know the quality of his bread but we have serious doubts about his technique for making new friends. This 23 year old baker based in Challes (France) simply decided to set fire to your neighbors’ cars since mid-October in order to “know people and see the firefighters do a great job”. While the town is in shock, investigators are trying to understand the behavior of this craftsman after his series of arsons.

The damage caused by car fires in this town of Sarthe is still visible on the ground, where the tar has melted. While parked a few steps from the bakery, neighborhood vehicles were charred by a young adult last Saturday, November 4.

Ce pyromaniac unsuspected quickly made headlines in the region, but the victims blamed it. Suspicion began to swirl around him when investigators realized he was at the scene of the fires each time. Sometimes, it was even him who called for help! His “work” was not just limited to cars, he had set several objectives such as trash cans, book boxes, an outbuilding, a garage door… How did he go about it? Nothing very complicated to find. Newspaper and inflamed tissue did the trick.

Less than a week after the last fires, on Friday November 10, he was arrested by the police. What he didn’t know was that they had set up a video surveillance system to monitor the surroundings of the bakery. In the images, we see a man going back and forth between the bakery and a vehicle which he sets on fire.

Sentenced to 18 months in prison, including 9 months suspended, by the Le Mans judicial court, he was placed under a 9-month committal warrant. The baker admitted all the facts, apart from the first fire. He was acquitted for this one. The most surprising part of this story lies in the reason the baker gave to explain his action: “I wanted to see the firefighters, because it’s a great job. I would have liked to exercise it. I also wanted to get to know the neighbors, for them to come out and talk.” Witnesses say that he asked the gendarmes questions about their way of investigating, and the penalties incurred for arson (quite suspicious)… A desire to socialize and show off which will cost him dearly…
