BMW, the German manufacturer, is currently embroiled in a scandal involving its Cobalt supplier, which is releasing large quantities of arsenic into the environment.
BMW is facing potential turmoil due to its Moroccan cobalt supplier, Managem, who is under investigation for releasing excessive amounts of arsenic into the environment.
Managem, a Moroccan company and one of BMW’s Cobalt providers, is the focus of this scandal. Investigations by the German press have revealed high levels of arsenic being released into the environment.
The source of the problem seems to be the Bou Azzer mine in southern Morocco, according to reports from German media outlets NDR, WDR, and Süddeutsche Zeitung.
Chemist Wolf von Tümpling from Magdebourd, Germany, claims that dangerous amounts of arsenic have contaminated the water in neighboring valleys.
Several employees of Managem have also reported that international safety standards for workers are not being met. In response to these serious allegations, BMW has initiated an investigation and demanded explanations from the management at Managem:
“BMW immediately opened an investigation and asked Managem management to provide explanations. In the event of misconduct, BMW will demand immediate corrective action.”
It is clear that BMW is treating this investigation with utmost seriousness. This is due to the fact that the two companies have a contract for Cobalt supply until 2025, which was signed in 2020 and is crucial for BMW’s electric cars.
