Record: This Ferrari becomes the 2nd most expensive car in the world!

At a Sotheby’s auction in New York, a Ferrari 250 GTO became the second most expensive car in the world.

Considered “The Holy Grail of the pantheon of sports cars” by Sotheby’s, which handled the auction, a Ferrari 250 GTO was sold last Monday in New York for 51.7 million dollars! She thus becomes the second most expensive car in the world. First place remains awarded to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé, which left in 2022 for 135 millions.

The fall season ends on a record

Sotheby’s and Christie’s are seeing their fall seasons come to an end. These are two of the largest auction houses in the world, which have just sold for several billion dollars all kinds of art: Picasso, Monet, Cézanne, and Rothko were sold by telephone or during evenings bringing together collectors, each more fortunate than the last.

One Ferrari dethrones another

It is an American collector who had owned this gem of an automobile for 38 years. Now, this Italian racing car has become the second most expensive car in the world, doing better than another Ferrari 250 GTO from 2018. The latter was also put up for sale by Sotheby’s, for an amount of 48 million dollars. This is still less than the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé, sold in 2022 for 135 million euros (!).

You should know that there are only two examples of this Mercedes sports car. Its auction had been carried out confidentially in the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart. Never before has a car been sold so expensive.

As for the 1962 Ferrari, it was gone in just a few minutes. Time to see possible buyers battling it out during the auction. 60 million euros were hoped for, but ultimately a lower sum was proposed. Despite the war in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip, auction prices are not falling and the sector is doing well. Both for car sales and in art. But after all, this Ferrari has all the beauty of the work of an artist.
